March 4 World Tennis Day
Spring is fast approaching. We are more and more eager to go outside to play sports or just take a walk.
In the old days, tennis was among the fashionable sports. Young people in particular enjoyed playing. In his memoirs, Alfred III Potocki mentions playing tennis several times during his numerous travels. He played tennis while staying in England in the summer just before the outbreak of WWI. He also played tennis with his brother Jerzy before the war in the Łańcut gardens. While staying in California in 1933 as a guest of the famous William
Rendolph Hearst at his fabulous San Simeon estate also played tennis with his host's sweetheart, among others
Marion Davies and Gloria Swanson (a famous American actress).
The Łańcut society also played tennis during the season in August in Julin. However, the most famous tennis courts were built in the middle of a Łańcut park surrounded by lime tree avenues. The five tennis courts cover about 3,000 square meters. From the south, east and west the courts are surrounded by a double semicircular pergola. Surrounding it are roses, climbing plants, including glycines. The pergola is supported by pillars of raw brick. The courts and the decorative pergola were built in the interwar period.
